What is high-pulsed power?

High-pulsed power is the compression and rapid release of small quantities of electrical energy to obtain extremely high power discharges. We use these to generate precise shockwaves, create powerful magnetic fields, and generate electrical fields and electric arcs.

Here’s how it works:
Since Power (P) is Energy (E) over Time (t), the same quantity of energy released in a very short amount of time results in extremely high levels of power.

Magnetic fields are harnessed to make metal behave like a liquid without getting hot. That enables low-cost, high precision forming and cold welding of dissimilar materials that are impossible to join using conventional methods.

Rock crushing, metals forming, well remediation
Shockwaves
Powerful shockwaves generated in a liquid environment can break apart rocks, either to clear blockages in wells or create a low-cost crushing process for use in mineral recovery. They can also be used to push metals at high speeds for electro-hydraulic forming applications.
Electrical arcs

Electrical arcs
Extremely short and high-powered electrical arcs generated in contact with rock causes spalling (micro-explosions) of the rock. Repeated at high speeds, this process can be used to drill efficiently through even the hardest of materials.

Minerals discovery, water discovery
Electrical fields
High power currents injected into the ground generate effects at depth that can be measured at the surface. Using these measurements in mathematical calculations, we can determine the electrical properties of underground formations (chargeability, resistivity and conductivity), improving probabilities of finding otherwise hidden mineral, water or resources.

From military to machinery

Pulsed power was initially used exclusively for defense research. It was deployed to test the effects of a nuclear explosion on strategic assets without having to detonate a nuclear device.
